DTF Printing: Where It Genuinely Wins, and Where It Does Not

Direct-to-film prints a design onto a carrier film, coats it with adhesive powder, cures it, and heat-presses it onto the garment. It has become the default for small full-colour runs because it removes the two things that made those jobs awkward: screen setup, and the fabric restrictions of direct-to-garment.
What DTF genuinely does better
- **No setup cost per colour.** A twelve-colour design costs the same to set up as a one-colour design, which is exactly backwards from screen printing and is why it dominates small runs.
- **Works on almost any fabric.** Cotton, polyester, blends, and technical fabrics that DTG cannot pretreat successfully. This is its biggest practical advantage over DTG.
- **Strong colour on dark garments,** because the white layer is printed as part of the transfer rather than requiring separate garment pretreatment.
- **Fine detail and gradients** reproduce well, since it is a digital process with no halftone screen limitation.
- **Transfers can be made in advance** and applied later, which suits on-demand and personalisation workflows.
Where it is the wrong choice
- 1**Large solid coverage.** A big block of solid colour in DTF is a large continuous sheet of film adhered to the fabric. It is noticeably present, reduces breathability, and behaves differently from the garment around it.
- 2**High volume with few colours.** Once a single-colour design passes roughly 50 pieces, screen printing overtakes it on cost and produces a better hand feel. Our pricing tiers show where that crossover sits.
- 3**Softest possible hand.** A water-based or discharge screen print sits in the fibre. DTF sits on it. On a premium garment where feel is the point, that difference is the whole argument.
- 4**Heavily textured or high-pile fabrics,** where the transfer cannot make even contact.
What determines whether a DTF print lasts
Failures are almost always application rather than the technology. Three variables decide it: temperature, pressure and time, and all three have to be right together.
Under-pressed prints peel at the edges after a few washes. Over-pressed prints can scorch the garment or leave a visible press mark. Insufficient adhesive powder cure means poor bonding regardless of press settings. A supplier who cannot tell you their press parameters is guessing.
The care instruction that matters
Wash inside out, cold, and do not tumble dry. Tumble drying is the main killer of transfer prints — the heat softens the adhesive while mechanical action works at the edges. Most "the print failed" complaints are dryer damage, and a care label plus one line on the product page prevents a large share of them.
Choosing between the three digital-era options
Small run, full colour, mixed fabrics: DTF. Small run, cotton, softest possible feel: DTG. Larger run, few colours, best durability and hand: screen. Those three sentences cover the majority of real decisions, and the quantity is usually what settles it rather than the artwork.
