DTF Printing Explained: What Buyers Need to Know

DTF printing gets thousands of UK searches a month, split between people curious about what it is and printers buying DTF transfers. If you're a buyer ordering shirts, you don't need to know how to run the machine. You just need to know when DTF is the right call for your design.

How DTF works, simply

The design is printed onto a special film using textile inks, including a white layer. A powdered adhesive is applied while the ink is wet, then cured. The finished transfer is heat-pressed onto the garment, and the film is peeled away, leaving the design bonded to the fabric.

What DTF is great at

• Full colour, gradients and photographs.
• Fine detail and small text.
• Short runs, because there are no screens per colour.
• Designs that vary per shirt, like names.
• Printing on dark and light garments with bright colours.
• Working on cotton, polyester and blends.

Where it's not the best choice

• Very large, solid areas, which can feel a bit like a layer on top of the fabric.
• Huge runs of a simple one- or two-colour design, where screen printing usually works out cheaper.
• When you want ink that feels part of the fabric, which suits water-based screen printing better.

DTF vs screen printing

Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh screen, one colour at a time. It's extremely durable and cost-effective at volume for designs with few colours. DTF has no per-colour setup and handles complex artwork easily. Many orders use both: screen print the main design, DTF the individual names.

DTF vs DTG

DTG, direct to garment, prints straight onto the shirt like an inkjet printer. It feels very soft and is great for single pieces on cotton, but can be less vivid on dark garments. DTF generally gives brighter colours on dark shirts and works on more fabrics.

How long does DTF last?

A properly applied DTF print holds up well to regular washing. Give care instructions: wash inside out, cool wash, no tumble drying on high heat, and don't iron directly on the print.

Artwork for DTF

Send a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background at the actual print size, or a vector file. Remove any background colour unless you want it printed as a box. Thin, isolated specks or very fine outlines can be delicate, so avoid tiny floating details.

Checking a DTF sample

If you're ordering DTF shirts for the first time, look at a sample closely. Stretch the fabric gently and check the print moves with it rather than cracking. Run your hand over it to check the edges are smooth. Look at small text and fine details. And wash it a few times the way customers would. That tells you more than any spec sheet.

Common uses for DTF

DTF suits photo tees, detailed illustrations, names and numbers, and small runs of many designs. It's also useful on polyester sportswear where some other methods struggle.
