Do Printed Clothes Shrink?

Yes, printed clothes can shrink, but it is the garment that shrinks rather than the print, because cured ink and stitched thread do not move. On a modern pre-shrunk cotton tee expect only a small amount of movement, mostly in the first hot wash and mostly in length, and the usual visible effect is a print that looks slightly larger relative to the body or shows a faint pucker at its edges. Wash cool and dry gently and you will barely see it.
The Fabric Moves, the Ink Stays Put
This is the whole mechanism. A screen print, DTF transfer or DTG print is a layer of cured pigment bonded to the fabric surface. Embroidery is thread locked into the cloth. Neither of them contracts when heated and agitated. The cotton around them does. When a garment shrinks by a couple of percent, the print area cannot follow, so the fabric gathers slightly around a rigid patch and you get a subtle ripple at the print edges. On a soft water-based or DTG print, which sits in the fibres rather than on them, you will hardly notice. On thick plastisol on a lightweight tee, it can be quite visible.
Where the Shrinkage Actually Comes From
Two things are happening. The first is relaxation shrinkage: knitting stretches yarn under tension, and the first proper wash lets that tension release, which is why nearly all the movement happens early. The second is felting or consolidation, driven by heat and mechanical agitation, and this is the one that keeps going wash after wash if you tumble dry hot every time. Pre-shrunk or compacted fabric has had the relaxation stage done at the mill, which is why quality blanks move much less than cheap ones.
What to Expect by Fibre
Not all fabrics behave the same way, and the differences are big enough to change how you order.
- Pre-shrunk ring-spun cotton: minimal movement, mostly in length, mostly on the first wash. The default for good custom tees and the least trouble.
- Untreated or heavier carded cotton: more movement, and it can keep creeping if you tumble dry hot. Common on cheaper blanks.
- Poly-cotton blends: noticeably more stable than pure cotton, because the polyester content does not shrink and holds the cotton in place.
- 100% polyester: effectively no shrinkage in normal domestic washing, though it will distort permanently if exposed to genuinely high heat.
- Viscose and modal blends: soft and drapey, but the least predictable in the wash, and worth treating cautiously for uniform where consistent sizing matters.
Length Before Width, Especially on Tees
Knitted jersey shrinks more along its length than across its width, because that is the direction the fabric was pulled during knitting and finishing. This is why a t-shirt that felt right when new can end up feeling cropped and boxy rather than tight. It matters for print placement: a chest print positioned generously low can creep upwards relative to the body as the garment shortens. For a large front print on a lightweight tee it is worth keeping the design a little away from the hem for that reason.
The Shrink That Already Happened Before You Saw It
Here is something most guides miss. Heat-applied decoration puts the garment under a press at high temperature, and that process itself takes a small amount of shrinkage out before the garment ever reaches you. A heat-pressed transfer or a cured screen print has already been through more heat than a domestic wash cycle will ever deliver. So a decorated garment often moves slightly less in its first wash than an identical undecorated one, which is the opposite of what people expect.

Ordering Around It Rather Than Fighting It
Do not routinely size up. Modern pre-shrunk blanks move so little that ordering a size larger to compensate leaves everyone in a garment that never fits properly. The exception is untreated heavyweight cotton, where a small allowance is sensible, and anything destined for a commercial laundry, which is far harsher than a domestic machine. For a uniform where consistent sizing genuinely matters, the reliable approach is to get one garment, wash it the way your team will actually wash it, measure it, and only then commit to a size curve for the whole workforce.
Washing Habits That Keep the Movement Small
Wash at 30 degrees, turn garments inside out to protect the print surface from abrasion, skip fabric softener because it coats fibres and dulls both print and thread, and keep tumble drying low or skip it entirely. Heat in the dryer causes more shrinkage than heat in the wash, so line drying is the single most effective habit. If you must iron, go around the print rather than over it, or press on the reverse. Include a short care note with any merch you sell, because most damage attributed to poor printing is really a hot tumble dryer.
