Do I Need Vector Artwork for Printing?

Not always. Screen printing and cut vinyl genuinely need vector artwork, because the design has to be separated into flat colours or cut along a path. DTF and DTG can print from a high-resolution raster file with a clean transparent background, so a good PNG is enough.

What Vector Means, Without the Jargon

A vector file stores shapes as mathematical paths. Scale it to the size of a building and the edges stay perfectly crisp. A raster file, such as a PNG or JPEG, stores a grid of pixels. Scale it up and the software has to invent the pixels that were never there, which is why enlarged logos look soft and blocky.

Vector files are usually AI, EPS, SVG, or a PDF that was saved with the vector data intact. That last one matters, because a PDF is just a container. It can hold a perfect vector logo or a screenshot someone pasted in. The extension tells you nothing on its own.

Where Vector Is Non-Negotiable

Screen printing separates a design into individual colours, one screen per colour. Those separations need hard, unambiguous edges. Given a soft raster logo, the separation has to guess where one colour ends and the next begins, and that guess shows up as ragged edges on a solid single-colour print. There is nowhere for it to hide.

Cut vinyl is even more absolute. A blade physically follows a path. If there is no path, there is nothing to cut. Names, numbers and simple logos in vinyl all require vector, or type that can be converted to it.

Where a Good Raster File Is Genuinely Fine

DTF and DTG both print in full colour, more like a very good inkjet than a press. They do not separate your design into flat colours, so a photographic or heavily shaded image is no harder for them than a flat logo. A 300 dpi PNG at final print size with a transparent background prints beautifully.

That is a real cost saving people miss. If your only asset is a decent raster logo and you were about to pay for a redraw, ask whether the job suits DTF first. For a detailed, multi-colour, short-run design it very often does.

What High Resolution Actually Means

Resolution without a size attached is meaningless. A file can be 300 dpi at 2cm wide, which is useless for a 25cm chest print. The measure that matters is 300 dpi at the size it will actually be printed. A 25cm wide print wants roughly 3000 pixels across.

The quickest self-check costs nothing. Open the file and zoom to 100%, then compare it against a ruler at the physical print width. If the edges are soft at that magnification, they will be soft on the garment. Most artwork rejections come from files that looked perfect only because they were being viewed small.

Embroidery Plays by Different Rules Entirely

This one surprises people. Embroidery does not use your vector file to stitch. It uses a digitised file, which is stitch data: direction, density, underlay, pull compensation, sequence. Someone builds that by hand from your artwork.

Vector is still the better starting point, because it gives the digitiser clean shapes to work from. But sending a vector file does not mean the job is ready to run, and no automatic conversion exists that produces a good result. Fine detail and small text usually need simplifying before stitching, and that is a design decision worth making with your input rather than without it.

If All You Have Is the Logo From Your Website

  • Check with whoever designed it. The original vector almost always exists somewhere, often in an email attachment from years ago.
  • Look for the file the sign-writer, the vehicle wrapper or the printer used. Anyone who put your logo on something physical needed vector.
  • If the mark is simple type and a basic shape, redrawing it properly is quick and you own a reusable asset afterwards.
  • If it is detailed and short-run, consider DTF and skip the redraw entirely.
  • Do not send a screenshot from social media. Platform compression destroys edges in exactly the way print exposes.

The JPEG Problem

JPEG cannot store transparency, so your logo arrives sitting on a white box. On a white t-shirt nobody notices. On navy, that box is the first thing anyone sees. JPEG also uses lossy compression, which smears fine halos around high-contrast edges, and those halos become visible speckling once printed.

Send PNG instead if raster is all you have. Same image, transparency preserved, no compression damage around the edges.

Screen print and vinyl: vector, or budget for a redraw. DTF and DTG: high-resolution PNG with transparency is fine. Embroidery: vector helps, but the real work is digitising. When in doubt, send the best file you have and ask before assuming it needs remaking.
