Women's fit garments differ from unisex in four measurable ways: a shorter body, a narrower shoulder, a higher armhole and a tapered side seam. Those changes affect print work directly, because the usable chest panel is smaller and it curves. The practical rule is to place prints higher and smaller than you would on unisex, and to offer both cuts within the same order rather than picking one for everybody.

Unisex Is Fine Until It Isn't

Plenty of people prefer a unisex tee, and offering only fitted cuts is as much of a mistake as offering only unisex. The honest position is that a unisex tee is a straight tube with set-in sleeves, and it works well on some bodies and badly on others. Where it fails is the shoulder line, which sits wide and drops the sleeve seam down the upper arm, and the body length, which on a size S unisex is often longer than a size L women's fit. Offering both cuts in a staff or club order costs nothing extra at Velocity Wear, because the 50-piece minimum applies to the order rather than to each style, and sizes mix freely within the run.

What Actually Changes in the Pattern

Knowing the specific differences helps you brief a design properly instead of guessing at it.

  • Body length is shorter, often by several centimetres at the same nominal size, which pulls the natural print position up.
  • The side seam is tapered rather than straight, so the widest point of the garment is the bust rather than the hem.
  • The armhole is higher and the shoulder narrower, which limits how wide a chest print can go before it starts to wrap.
  • Fabric is frequently lighter, tightly knitted ringspun cotton, which shows a heavy ink deposit more obviously than a heavier open knit.
  • Necklines are often scooped or lower, changing how much vertical space sits above a chest print.

Where Prints Distort, and Why Mockups Hide It

A design printed across the widest part of a fitted garment stretches most at that point once it is worn. A wide rectangular block or a long straight line of text will bow visibly. Circular badges go slightly oval. None of this shows on a flat-lay proof or a digital mockup, because both show the garment relaxed and two-dimensional. It is the single most common surprise when a first fitted run arrives.

Two fixes work reliably. Move the print up so its centre sits nearer the collarbone than the bust; this is the most useful adjustment and it also reads as more deliberate. And shrink it: around 20-24 cm wide sits comfortably on most women's fit tees where 28-30 cm would be normal on unisex. Designs built from a compact mark rather than a wide horizontal lockup survive the transition far better, which is worth knowing at the logo stage rather than at the print stage.

Sizing: Publish Measurements, Not Letters

Women's fit sizing varies wildly between blank manufacturers, and a letter on its own tells a buyer nothing. If you are selling, or collecting sizes from a team, publish actual garment measurements in centimetres, ideally chest width laid flat and body length from high point of shoulder. That one step removes most exchange requests. It also protects you when a range crosses two blank suppliers, which is common when you want a fitted tee from one brand and a fitted hoodie from another.

“"A size label is an opinion. A chest measurement in centimetres is a fact."”

Choosing a Decoration Method

Lighter fitted fabric shifts the calculation slightly. DTG works beautifully on 100% cotton fitted tees because it adds no weight or stiffness, and a fine knit takes detail well. DTF gives full colour on blends and short runs with no per-colour setup. Screen printing is still the best value at volume, but ask for a soft-hand ink: a thick opaque deposit on a light fitted tee is noticeable both to the touch and in how the garment hangs. Embroidery suits fitted polos and sweatshirts, though a scooped neckline leaves less vertical room, so a compact left-chest mark beats a tall stacked logo.

Building the Range and Ordering It

For staff kit, fix the design and the colour, then offer that design across a unisex and a fitted option so people choose their own cut. For retail, decide early whether fitted is a separate product or a size extension, because it changes how you list, photograph and stock it. Velocity Wear is an online supplier: brief, proof and order online, preview placement in the free Design Studio, and check pricing live in the instant calculator. Minimum 50 pieces per order with sizes mixed, bulk discounts up to around 35%, production from artwork approval at around 10-15 working days for screen printing and embroidery, and UK tracked delivery typically 2-5 working days after dispatch.

FAQ

Quick Answers

Common questions about design — answered.

Women's fit garments have a shorter body, narrower shoulders, a higher armhole and a tapered side seam, and are often cut from lighter ringspun cotton. The practical effect is a smaller, more curved print area, so artwork usually needs to sit higher and be scaled down.

Around 20-24 cm suits most women's fit tees, against roughly 28-30 cm on unisex. Placing the centre of the design nearer the collarbone than the bust also reduces the bowing that happens when a wide print stretches across the widest part of the garment.

Yes. The 50-piece minimum applies per order, not per style or per size, so you can mix cuts, sizes and colours in a single run and still qualify for the volume discount on the combined quantity.

DTG on 100% cotton adds no stiffness and handles fine detail well. DTF suits blends and full-colour short runs. Screen printing remains the best value at volume, but specify a soft-hand ink so the deposit does not stiffen a lightweight fitted garment.
