Custom t-shirts no minimum gets close to two thousand US searches a month. People want one shirt, or five, and don't want to be told to buy 50. Full disclosure: our minimum is 20 per design. So this isn't a sales pitch. It's an honest guide to when no-minimum services are right, and when they're not.
How no-minimum services work
Most no-minimum shirts are printed one at a time with digital methods like DTG (direct to garment) or DTF transfers. There's no screen setup, so a single shirt is possible. The trade-off is a higher price per shirt, because each one is essentially a custom job.
When no minimum is the right choice
- You need one to ten shirts.
- Every shirt has a completely different design.
- You're testing a design idea before committing.
- You're selling online with print on demand and don't want inventory.
- It's a one-off gift.
When a minimum order is better value
- You need 20 or more of the same design.
- You care about choosing the shirt weight, cotton and fit.
- You want screen printing's durability and vivid color.
- You want custom labels or packaging.
- Price per shirt matters, which it does for most groups.
The cost crossover
Somewhere in the teens, ordering a batch usually starts to beat single-shirt pricing on cost per shirt. Our tees start from $13 each at 20 pieces with one standard print. Compare that with the per-shirt price of a no-minimum service for your design. If you need 18 shirts, it's sometimes cheaper to order 20 and have two spares.
Low minimum is the middle ground
Traditional screen printers often ask for 48 or more. Overseas factories can ask for hundreds. A 20-piece minimum with mixed sizes covers most teams, businesses, small brands and events without forcing people to over-order.
Mixing sizes and names
Our minimum counts per design, not per size, so 20 shirts can be any mix of sizes, including youth. Individual names or numbers can vary on every shirt without breaking the minimum.
The honest recommendation
Need five shirts for a birthday? Use a no-minimum service. Need 25 for a softball team? Order a batch. Starting a brand? Test with pre-orders or print on demand, then move proven designs to bulk. Our print on demand vs bulk guide covers the switch.
Quality differences to expect
Single-shirt digital printing has improved a lot, and it's great for full-color artwork. It can feel slightly different from a screen print, and colors on dark shirts may be less punchy depending on the process. With batch orders you can usually choose a heavier, better blank and a more durable print method. If quality matters more than convenience, that's another point in favor of a batch.
Pooling orders to reach a minimum
Small groups sometimes pool orders. Two friend groups, a club and its supporters, or several departments can combine into one design of 20 or more. You get batch pricing and a better shirt.
Spare shirts are useful
If you're a few shirts short of 20, extras rarely go to waste. New members, late sign-ups and gifts use them up.
