Custom Puffer and Padded Jackets: Branding Without Puckering

A padded jacket is a three-layer sandwich: a woven shell, an insulating fill, and a lining, held together by quilting lines that stop the fill migrating. That sandwich is why branding needs care. Dense embroidery compresses the loft and puckers the shell, so the logo wants to be small, low in stitch count, and placed inside a single quilted channel rather than across a baffle seam.

How a Padded Jacket Is Actually Built

The shell is normally a lightweight polyester, often a ripstop or a peached poly, usually with a durable water repellent finish so light rain beads rather than soaks. Inside sits the fill, either synthetic wadding or down. Behind that is a lining, commonly a thin taffeta. The quilting is not decorative: without it, the fill slumps to the bottom of the jacket after a season and you get a cold chest and a fat hem.

That is worth knowing before you choose a style, because the quilt pattern dictates your branding options. Wide horizontal channels leave usable clear panels. A tight diamond quilt leaves almost none.

Wadding Weight and What It Buys

Synthetic fill is quoted in grams per square metre. Roughly 40 to 60 GSM gives you a packable jacket or a gilet you can stuff in a bag, and it is really a windproof layer with a bit of warmth. Around 120 to 180 GSM is a proper winter jacket for standing about outdoors. Beyond that you are into specialist cold-store territory.

Loft matters as much as weight. A well-lofted 100 GSM wadding traps more air, and therefore more warmth, than a compressed 140 GSM one. This is also why anything that squashes the fill, including a heavy stitched logo, has a real cost and not just a cosmetic one.

Why Dense Stitching Puckers a Quilted Panel

Embroidery pulls fabric inwards as it stitches. On a firm woven shirt that pull is absorbed by a stable backing. On a puffer the panel behind the shell is soft and compressible, so there is nothing solid for the backing to work against. The stitches compress the wadding underneath, the shell draws in around them, and you end up with a visible dimple ringing the logo. It shows worst in raking light, which is exactly the light a jacket lives in.

There is a second issue with down-filled jackets specifically. Every needle penetration is a hole in the shell, and down finds holes. Feathers work their way out around a dense embroidery over the following weeks. Synthetic wadding does not migrate that way, which is one practical reason branded corporate puffers are usually synthetic.

How to Get a Clean Logo on One Anyway

None of this means a padded jacket cannot be branded well. It means the design has to be built for the substrate.

  • Keep it small. A left-chest mark around 70 to 80mm wide behaves. A 150mm chest logo on a puffer rarely does.
  • Place it entirely inside one quilted channel, clear of the baffle seams, so the needle never crosses a stitched ridge.
  • Favour outline and text over large solid fills. Fill stitches are what compress the loft.
  • Specify a cut-away backing and a light topping, and ask for reduced stitch density on the digitised file.
  • For anything larger, use a woven badge or a low-temperature heat transfer rather than trying to embroider it.

Heat Transfers on a Polyester Shell

A transfer avoids needle holes, which is a genuine advantage, but it introduces heat. Lightweight polyester shells glaze and can distort at standard press temperatures, and the platen pressure flattens the loft under the design, leaving a shallow permanent depression. Low-temperature films made for technical fabrics exist precisely for this, and they are what a sensible decorator will reach for. Either way, a test garment first is not fussiness. It is the cheapest insurance available on a jacket order.

Zips, Pockets and Placement Geometry

Padded jackets often carry a zipped chest pocket sitting in almost exactly the place a left-chest logo wants to go. Check the sample before you sign off placement. You usually end up either above the pocket zip, or shifted outward towards the arm, and either way you want the position defined by measurement from the shoulder seam and from the nearest quilt line rather than described in words.

Gilets are worth mentioning here. With no sleeves and often a simpler quilt, a gilet gives you the cleanest chest area in the whole padded category, and it layers over a fleece or hoodie without the bulk. For a lot of teams a branded gilet is the more practical buy.
