Custom Embroidered Shirts: What Looks Good and What Doesn't

Custom embroidered shirts get thirty-six hundred US searches a month with essentially no competition. Businesses, clubs and brands want that stitched, textured look because it signals quality. Embroidery rewards a bit of planning, and punishes the lack of it with puckered fabric and unreadable letters.
Shirts that embroider best
- Polo shirts, especially piqué, which hides the backing and holds stitches neatly.
- Heavier t-shirts, around 6 oz and up, with small designs.
- Sweatshirts, hoodies and quarter zips.
- Fleeces and softshell jackets.
- Caps, which are practically made for embroidery.
Shirts that need extra care
Very lightweight tees can pucker around stitching. Stretchy performance fabrics need the right stabilizer and lighter designs. If you want embroidery on a tee, choose a heavier tee and keep the logo small.
Sizes that look right
- Left chest: about 3 to 4 inches wide.
- Sleeve: about 2 to 3 inches wide.
- Back yoke below the collar: about 4 to 6 inches wide.
- Cap front: about 4 to 4.5 inches wide, up to about 2 inches tall.
What doesn't stitch well
Lettering shorter than about a quarter inch, hairline strokes, gradients, drop shadows and photos. Most logos need a simplified embroidery version. That's normal, and your customers will never notice.
Digitizing
Your artwork is converted into a stitch file that controls how the machine sews: stitch type, direction, density and sequence. A careful digitizing job is why one embroidered logo looks crisp and another looks lumpy. Check small letters and edges on the proof.
Thread color
Thread comes in a fixed palette of shades. Provide a Pantone reference and we'll match the closest thread. On multi-color garment orders, you may need different thread colors for different shirt colors. Decide and record those pairings.
Common mistakes

Embroidery vs print
Choose embroidery for small logos and a premium, durable finish. Choose printing for big designs, photos and many colors. Plenty of garments use both: embroidered chest, printed back.
Care
Wash inside out, avoid bleach on colored threads, and don't iron directly over embroidery. It'll last as long as the shirt.
Budgeting embroidery
Embroidery pricing mostly follows stitch count. A small outline logo uses far fewer stitches than a solid, filled badge of the same size. If you're watching budget, reduce solid fill areas, keep the logo at a sensible size, and limit placements to one or two. That usually saves more than switching shirt styles.
Embroidered names and titles
Names or job titles on the right chest are common for service techs, medical staff and front desk teams. Keep lettering at least about a quarter inch tall in a clean font, and collect names exactly as they should appear. For high-turnover roles, a removable name badge may be more practical than embroidered names.
Multiple logo placements
A common professional setup is a left chest logo, a small sleeve logo and a name on the right chest. Each placement adds cost, so prioritize the ones customers actually see. The left chest is almost always the first priority.
Ordering
