Charity 5K Shirts: Race Shirts Runners Actually Keep

Charity 5Ks, turkey trots, color runs and school fun runs happen in every American town. The race shirt is part of registration, part of the sponsor package and part of the memory. Getting sizes and sponsors right is most of the work.

Cotton or tech fabric?

Serious runners often prefer moisture-wicking tech shirts. Many fun runs and family 5Ks use cotton, which is comfortable and worn afterward. Our tees are combed ring-spun cotton, great for fun runs, walks, turkey trots and volunteer shirts.

Sizing from registration

Add shirt size to your registration form. Close shirt guarantee at a set date so you can order accurately, and order a small buffer in popular sizes for race-day registrants. Include youth sizes for family events.

Sponsors

Sponsor logos usually go on the back in a tidy panel, sized by sponsorship tier. Get vector files early. Late sponsor logos are the number one cause of late race shirts.

Design

Race name, date and charity on the front. A fun graphic related to the cause or season. Bright colors photograph well and help course marshals.

Volunteer shirts

Volunteers need a different color with VOLUNTEER or STAFF on the back. It makes the event safer and easier to run.

Turkey trots and holiday runs

Thanksgiving turkey trots are some of the biggest races of the year. Long sleeve tees or crewnecks suit cold mornings. Order early; November is busy.

Timing

Production takes 10 to 15 working days after artwork approval, plus shipping. Set the sponsor deadline six weeks before race day and the shirt-size cutoff about four to five weeks before.

Mistakes to avoid

A realistic size split for adult 5Ks

If registration data isn't available yet, past events are the best guide. For a typical mixed adult 5K, medium and large usually account for the biggest share, followed by XL, with small and 2XL smaller again. Family and school events shift heavily toward youth sizes. Whatever your split, keep a race-day buffer of around five to ten percent in the two or three most common sizes, and accept that someone will still ask for a 4XL at 7am.

Sponsor tiers that don't wreck the design

Sponsor panels get messy when every sponsor wants to be big. A simple structure works: a presenting sponsor gets a larger logo at the top of the back panel, gold sponsors share a middle row, and community sponsors sit in a smaller grid below. Tell sponsors the tier sizes when they sign up, not when artwork is due. If a logo only exists as a blurry JPEG, ask for a proper file early; recreating logos at the last minute is how deadlines slip.

Using leftover shirts well

There are always leftovers: no-shows, the wrong size split, a sponsor who ordered extras. Sell them at the finish line at a small discount, give them to volunteers who missed out, or keep a few for next year's photos and social posts. If the date isn't on the front, leftovers can be offered to next year's early registrants as a thank-you.

Photos that help next year's race

Race shirts are your best marketing for next year. Station a volunteer photographer at the start and finish, post galleries quickly, and tag sponsors. A sea of bright matching shirts on the start line is the image that gets people to register next year.
