Appliqué, Patches and Woven Labels: Decoration That Is Not Print

Print is the default because it is versatile and cost-effective. Applied decoration — appliqué, patches, woven labels — occupies a different position: more expensive, more physical, and read by customers as more considered. Knowing what each does helps you spend where it registers.

Appliqué

A piece of fabric cut to shape and stitched onto the garment, usually with a satin-stitch border. It is what makes varsity lettering look like varsity lettering.

It suits large, bold shapes — exactly the shapes that are expensive in embroidery, because a large embroidered fill is a lot of stitches. Appliqué covers area with fabric and only stitches the edges, so it is often cheaper than embroidery at large sizes while looking more substantial.

Woven versus embroidered patches

• **Embroidered patches** are stitched with thread. Textured, raised, traditional. Detail is limited by stitch width in the same way as direct embroidery.
• **Woven patches** are made on a loom with fine threads. Flatter, smoother, and capable of much finer detail — small text is legible where embroidery would fill in.
• **Printed patches** allow full colour and photographic content, at the cost of the textile character that makes a patch feel like a patch.

The choice usually follows detail. A simple bold badge suits embroidery. A crest with fine linework or small type needs weaving.

How patches attach, and why it matters

1. 1**Sewn on.** Most durable, and the only sensible option for anything washed frequently.
2. 2**Heat-sealed.** Faster and cheaper, and adequate for light use. It can lift over time, particularly at corners.
3. 3**Hook-and-loop backed.** Removable, which suits uniforms where the same garment carries different names or roles.
4. 4**Both.** Heat-sealed for positioning and then sewn, which is common on production runs and gives the best result.

Woven neck labels

The most underrated spend in custom apparel. A branded woven label in the neck costs little at reasonable quantity and changes how the garment is perceived entirely — it is the difference between a printed blank and a product with a brand.

It is also the detail a customer encounters privately, while putting the garment on. Printed neck labels are cheaper and wear off; woven labels last the life of the garment. If you are building a clothing brand rather than producing merch, this is where a small budget goes furthest.

Cost and minimums

Patches and woven labels are manufactured items with their own minimums, usually higher than a garment minimum. That is worth planning for: ordering labels in a quantity that covers several production runs is normally cheaper per unit and removes a lead-time dependency from every subsequent order.

The setup is a one-off per design. Once a label or patch exists, reorders are straightforward — which makes these a better investment for a design you intend to repeat than for a one-off drop.
