Upscaling Artwork for Large-Format Garment Prints Without Losing Detail

Resolution problems scale with print size, and large-format garment printing is where they become unignorable. A logo that prints perfectly at 8cm on a chest can be unusable at 40cm across a back, from exactly the same file.
The arithmetic, once
Garment printing generally targets 300 DPI at final size. Multiply the print width in inches by 300 to get the pixels you need.
- **Left chest, 8cm wide** — about 950 pixels. Almost any file manages this.
- **Standard front, 25–30cm** — about 3,000 to 3,500 pixels.
- **Full back, 35–40cm** — about 4,100 to 4,700 pixels.
- **All-over print** — often 6,000 pixels or more, depending on the placement and repeat.
Most logos supplied to us are somewhere between 500 and 1,500 pixels, because they were made for a website. That is the entire problem in one sentence.
What upscaling actually does
Traditional interpolation averages neighbouring pixels, producing a larger, softer version of the same image. Model-based upscalers do something different: they reconstruct plausible detail based on what they have learned edges, textures and type look like. On the right source that is genuinely impressive.
The catch is the word plausible. An upscaler invents detail that is consistent with the image, not detail that was there. On a photograph nobody notices. On a logo, invented detail is a distorted brand mark, and on lettering it produces characters that are subtly the wrong shape.
When to upscale and when to redraw
- 1**Redraw, always, for logos and type.** A brand mark is geometry. Redrawing it as vector takes a designer an hour or two and gives you a file that prints at any size forever. Upscaling a logo is a false economy every time.
- 2**Upscale for photographic and illustrative content** where invented texture is acceptable and no one is comparing against an original.
- 3**Redraw for anything going to screen printing,** because separation needs clean flat areas and an upscaled raster gives you noisy ones.
- 4**Upscale once, never twice.** Each pass compounds the invention. Go back to the highest-resolution original you have rather than upscaling an upscale.
Vector is the actual answer
Vector artwork stores shapes as maths rather than pixels, so it prints identically at 8cm and 80cm. For logos, type, flat illustration and anything with hard edges, vector removes the resolution question permanently.
If you own a brand, own it in vector. Ask whoever made your logo for the AI, EPS or SVG file. If they have gone, having it redrawn is a one-off cost that pays for itself the first time you print something large.
What we do with a file that is too small
We tell you at quote stage rather than after production. Depending on the design that means suggesting a smaller placement, recommending a redraw, or advising a decoration method that is more forgiving — embroidery, for instance, does not care about source resolution at all, because it is stitched from a digitised path rather than printed from pixels.
