The most effective packaging decisions are unglamorous: use less of it, size it to the contents, and choose materials that are genuinely recyclable in ordinary household collections. Compostable and biodegradable options are more complicated than they appear and depend heavily on how they are actually disposed of.

Keep the Impact in Proportion

Packaging is highly visible — the customer holds it — which makes it feel like the main sustainability decision. In an apparel business it usually is not. The garment itself, the quantity you ordered, and how long it stays in use almost certainly outweigh the mailer it arrived in. That does not make packaging unimportant, but a brand shipping over-ordered stock in compostable mailers has optimised the smaller variable.

What Genuinely Helps

In rough order of usefulness.

  • Use less. The lowest-impact packaging is the packaging you did not use — clothing does not need void fill, corner protection or a rigid box.
  • Right-size it. An oversized mailer wastes material, costs more to send and takes more space in transit.
  • Choose widely recyclable materials. Paper and card are collected kerbside almost everywhere; specialist materials frequently are not.
  • Avoid mixed materials. A paper mailer with a plastic window or plastic tape is much harder to recycle than either material alone.
  • Reuse where you can. Reusing incoming packaging for outgoing orders is genuinely lower-impact than buying new, sustainable or not.

Compostable Is Not Simple

Compostable mailers sound like a clear improvement and are more complicated in practice. Many require industrial composting facilities that most customers cannot access, and there is limited kerbside collection for them in much of the UK. Put in a recycling bin they can contaminate the stream; put in landfill they may not break down as intended. Home-compostable certification is a stronger claim than industrially compostable, but still assumes the customer has a compost heap and will use it. Recycled paper that goes into an ordinary kerbside bin is often the more reliably better outcome.

“"A material is only as sustainable as the bin your customer actually puts it in."”

Avoiding Greenwashing

If you make environmental claims, be specific and be able to substantiate them. Vague terms like eco-friendly and green have no fixed meaning and are increasingly scrutinised — the Competition and Markets Authority has published guidance on environmental claims, and it is worth reading before writing marketing copy. Saying our mailers are made from recycled paper and can go in your household recycling is both more useful and more defensible than saying our packaging is sustainable.

Tell Customers What to Do

Whatever you choose, a short line on the packaging telling the customer how to dispose of it materially improves the outcome. People generally want to do the right thing and frequently do not know which bin an unfamiliar material belongs in. This costs nothing and converts a good material choice into an actual result.

The Larger Lever

Ordering accurately remains the biggest reduction available. Producing garments that do not sell wastes far more than any packaging choice recovers. Orders start at 50 pieces with mixed sizes allowed, which supports testing before scaling, and bulk discounts up to around 35% still reward consolidating an accurate forecast into one order rather than fragmenting it. Common questions about sustainability — answered.

Less of it, sized to the contents, in widely recyclable materials like paper and card. Clothing does not need void fill or rigid boxes, so much conventional protective packaging is unnecessary.

They are more complicated than they appear. Many need industrial composting facilities most customers cannot access, and in the wrong bin they can contaminate recycling or fail to break down. Recycled paper going into kerbside recycling is often the more reliable outcome.

Ordering accurately. Producing garments that do not sell wastes far more than any packaging choice recovers, so testing before scaling and forecasting well is the larger lever.
