Sustainable Packaging for Apparel Brands: Mailers, Tags & Less Waste

By The Velocity Wear Team

Packaging is the first physical thing a customer touches — and one of the easiest places to reduce waste without reworking your product. A few considered swaps cut your footprint, support your brand story, and often cost little more than the plastic they replace.

Swap the highest-impact items first

  • Mailers — recycled or paper mailers instead of virgin poly bags.
  • Tape & fill — paper tape and recycled or shredded-paper void fill, not plastic.
  • Tags & labels — recycled card hang tags and woven labels.
  • Inks — soy or water-based inks on packaging and tags.
  • Stickers & inserts — recycled paper, kept to a minimum.

Right-size everything

Oversized packaging wastes material and ships air, which raises both cost and emissions. Matching the box or mailer to the product is one of the simplest, cheapest sustainability wins — and it makes the unboxing feel considered rather than wasteful.

Make it reusable or recyclable

Aim for packaging your customer can easily recycle kerbside, or genuinely reuse. Avoid mixed-material packaging (paper bonded to plastic) that cannot be separated, and print clear recycling guidance so the good intentions actually happen.

The unboxing still matters

Sustainable does not mean plain. Branded recycled tissue, a belly band, a custom-printed paper mailer and a thank-you card on recycled stock deliver a premium unboxing while staying low-waste. Done well, eco packaging feels more premium, not less.

Be specific, not vague. “Recycled mailer, paper tape, FSC card tags” builds trust; an unbacked “eco-friendly” stamp invites scepticism.

Communicate it honestly

Say exactly what is sustainable and why, and do not overclaim. Customers and regulators are quick to spot greenwashing, so specific, truthful claims about your packaging will always serve you better than a vague badge.

Velocity Wear offers recycled mailers, recycled card tags and woven labels, and eco inks, with right-sized, retail-ready packaging for your range. Ask for a sustainable packaging spec with your next order.
