Custom keychain colours come from two materials. On rubber PVC, each colour is a separate area of solid moulded material, so a logo is built from a few flat colours; on acrylic, the artwork is printed, so gradients and many colours are possible. Metal, leather and wood are laser engraved in one tone. Send your colour references with the logo, and the colour is confirmed on the proof.
Which keychain materials can carry brand colours?
Two of the six. The table shows how colour behaves on each material, and why the first colour decision is really a material decision. If your logo is recognised by its colours, it belongs on PVC or acrylic, both shown on the keychain range.
| Material | How colour works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber PVC | A solid colour per area of the mould, raised in 3D | Logos and crests built from a few flat colours |
| Acrylic | Printed artwork, following the file | Gradients, illustrations, many brand colours |
| Metal | One engraved tone set by the metal and finish | Shape-led logos and monograms |
| Leather | One tone, a darker shade of the strap | Quiet, tone-on-tone branding |
| Wood | One darker tone in the grain | Bold outlines on a warm base |
| Bottle opener | One engraved tone on steel | A short name or icon |

How does colour work on a PVC keychain?
Each colour is its own area. The mould has a separate recess for every colour in the design, and each is filled with PVC of that colour, so the finished logo is a set of flat, solid colours standing in raised 3D. There is no blending: a gradient has to become two or three bands of solid colour, and a thin outline between colours helps keep them distinct. Fewer colours usually make a cleaner keychain. Custom PVC keychains covers the rest of the mould's rules.
How is colour printed on an acrylic keychain?
Acrylic is printed, so it reproduces the file rather than a set of filled areas: gradients, shading, photographic artwork and many colours all come across. The question unique to acrylic is what sits behind the colour. On clear material, any area left unprinted shows through, so a design can float on clear acrylic or sit on a printed colour panel. The proof shows which version you are approving. See acrylic keychains in bulk for file preparation.
Can a keychain match my Pantone colour?
Send the Pantone reference, but treat the proof as the confirmation rather than assuming an exact match in advance. Pantone is a numbered colour system brands use to specify colours. How a colour comes out depends on the material and method: a solid PVC fill and a print on clear acrylic behave differently, and a screen shows neither exactly. At Velocity Wear the colour for your run is confirmed on the proof before production, and a sample shows the real thing.
What colour references should you send?
- Pantone references for each brand colour, if your brand guidelines list them.
- CMYK or hex values as a back-up, labelled by colour.
- Your brand guidelines PDF, if you have one.
- A vector logo with each colour as a separate, named swatch.
- A note of which colour matters most, in case a trade-off is needed.
Ordering caps for the same brand? Matching colours in embroidery thread is a separate task with its own limits, covered in thread colours on custom caps, but the same Pantone and hex references serve both orders, so keep one colour sheet for the whole kit.
Why are engraved keychains only one colour?
Because engraving adds nothing. A laser marks the metal, leather or wood where the logo sits, and the mark takes whatever tone that material gives: a contrast on metal, a darker shade on leather, a brown mark in wood. That is a strength for permanence and a limit for colour. A multi-colour logo engraves as a single-tone shape, so check it still reads without its colours; keychain logo ideas covers simplifying a mark.
What does a keychain proof show about colour?
The digital proof shows your logo on the chosen keychain with every colour placed: which areas are which PVC colour, or how the print sits on clear or on a panel for acrylic. Check each area against your references before approving, since the 10 to 15 working days of production start from that approval. For the physical colour in the hand, one or two samples cost £150 including worldwide shipping, credited against the bulk order.
