Dyeing Is Where Most of the Impact Is, and Nobody Talks About It

Almost every sustainability conversation in apparel is about fibre — organic, recycled, natural, synthetic. Meanwhile the fabric is dyed and finished in a process that uses a great deal of water, a great deal of heat, and a working chemistry that varies enormously between facilities. It is the least visible part of the chain and one of the most consequential.
What actually happens in dyeing
Fabric is immersed in a bath of water, dye and auxiliary chemicals, heated, held, then rinsed repeatedly until the water runs clear. Each rinse is fresh water in and effluent out. Then it is finished — softeners, sometimes anti-pilling or performance treatments — and dried, which is where the energy goes.
Two things drive the impact: how much water is used per kilogram of fabric, and what happens to that water afterwards. A facility with effluent treatment and one without can run the identical process to opposite effect.
The choices that genuinely reduce it
- 1**Undyed or natural fabric.** The lowest-impact option is not dyeing at all. Ecru, natural and unbleached fabrics skip the whole stage, and they have become a legitimate aesthetic rather than a compromise.
- 2**Standard stock colours over bespoke.** A mill running a colour continuously is far more efficient than a small bespoke lot dyed specially, which carries the same setup and rinse cycle for a fraction of the output.
- 3**Darker or mid shades over brilliant whites.** Optical brightening and heavy bleaching carry their own chemical load.
- 4**Fewer colourways.** Five colours in a range means five dye lots. Three means three, with less fabric waste and better price at every tier.
Garment dyeing versus piece dyeing
Piece dyeing colours the fabric before cutting; garment dyeing colours the finished garment. Garment dyeing gives the soft, slightly uneven, lived-in look that has become popular, and it lets a manufacturer hold blank stock and colour it to order — which reduces the risk of dyeing fabric nobody buys.
It also uses water per garment rather than per roll, and colour consistency between lots is harder. Neither method is straightforwardly better; the decision usually comes down to the look you want and how much colour variation you can accept.
The question to ask
Ask whether the dyehouse has effluent treatment, and whether it works to a restricted substances list. Those two questions separate facilities more than any certification logo does, and a manufacturer who knows their supply chain can answer them.
If the answer is vague, that is itself informative. It usually means the fabric is bought on the open market with no visibility past the trader — which is common, and which is also why the product-passport direction of travel is going to be uncomfortable for a lot of the industry.
What this means for an order
Choosing from stock colours rather than requesting a bespoke Pantone is usually the single most effective decision available to a small order, and it happens to be cheaper and faster too. Bespoke dyeing genuinely earns its place at volume, where the lot is large enough to be efficient — which is roughly where our 250-piece tier starts and lab dips become worthwhile.
