Clothing Manufacturers in the USA vs Overseas

By The Velocity Wear Team

Clothing manufacturers USA gets about twenty-four hundred searches a month at low difficulty. Brands searching usually want to know whether domestic production is realistic for them. We should be clear: we don't manufacture in the US. So here's an honest comparison of both options.

US manufacturing: strengths

  • Fast shipping and no import duties for US sales.
  • Easier factory visits and communication.
  • A genuine Made in USA claim, if the product qualifies.
  • Quicker reorders for fast-moving products.

US manufacturing: trade-offs

  • Higher labor costs and unit prices.
  • Limited domestic capacity for knitting, dyeing and some garment types.
  • Many US cut-and-sew shops still use imported fabric.
  • Minimums and waitlists at popular factories.

Overseas manufacturing: strengths

  • Lower unit costs at volume.
  • Integrated supply chains for fabric, trims and decoration.
  • Capacity to scale.
  • Specialist skills in certain garments.

Overseas manufacturing: trade-offs

  • Freight time and cost.
  • Import duties and tariffs, which change and vary by product and origin.
  • Time zones and communication.
  • Harder to visit and audit.

Duties and tariffs

Apparel import duties depend on classification, fiber and country of origin, and trade policy changes. Talk to a licensed customs broker before pricing your products, and build a buffer into margins.

Made in USA rules

The FTC requires unqualified Made in USA claims to mean all or virtually all of the product is made in the US. Imported goods must be labeled with their country of origin. Don't blur this.

Minimums matter most at launch

For a new brand, the minimum order can decide more than geography. Our minimum is 20 per design with sizes mixed, with production in 10 to 15 working days from artwork approval.

Questions for any manufacturer

  1. 1What's the minimum per design and size?
  2. 2Can I get a sample?
  3. 3When does the lead time start?
  4. 4Where does the fabric come from?
  5. 5What's included in the price, and what about duties?

Quick checklist

  • Is Made in USA central to your brand?
  • Landed cost compared, including duties?
  • Minimum you can afford to hold?
  • Labels accurate for origin?
  • Customs broker consulted?

Calculating landed cost

The only fair comparison is landed cost: the price of getting a finished product into your warehouse. For overseas production, that includes the unit price, decoration, labels and packaging, freight, insurance, customs broker fees, duties and domestic delivery. For domestic production, it includes the unit price, decoration and shipping. Put both in a spreadsheet at the quantity you'll actually order.

Speed to market

Domestic production can be faster for reorders, especially when a design sells out. Overseas production plus freight takes longer, so brands producing overseas typically keep more safety stock. If your product is trend-driven, speed may matter more than unit cost.

Quality control

Quality depends on the manufacturer, not the country. Ask for pre-production samples, approve a written spec, and inspect deliveries on arrival. Our process includes a proof before production, and samples are available before you commit.

Ethics and transparency

Customers increasingly ask where clothes are made and under what conditions. Ask any manufacturer about working conditions, audits and certifications, and only make ethical claims you can back up. Transparency about origin, rather than vague language, builds trust.

A hybrid approach

Some brands produce core bestsellers at volume overseas for cost efficiency and use faster, smaller domestic runs for tests and restocks. The right mix depends on margins, cash flow and how quickly your products sell.
