How to Choose a Lower-Impact Garment Without Overclaiming

Most buyers who want to do better get stuck between two bad options: making claims they cannot support, or doing nothing because the subject is complicated. There is a workable middle — choose a better specification, ask a few precise questions, and describe the result factually.
The specification checklist
- 1**Weight first.** Choose the heavier fabric you can justify. Durability outweighs every material choice on per-wear impact and is the easiest thing to get right.
- 2**Single fibre where practical.** Easier to recycle, and usually better feeling. Blends are fine when chosen deliberately for a reason.
- 3**Ring-spun or combed yarn.** Pills less, lasts longer, feels better. Cheap on the spec sheet, obvious in the hand.
- 4**Stock colours.** Avoids a bespoke dye lot for a small order, which is the least efficient thing you can ask a dyehouse to do.
- 5**Water-based print where the design allows.** Softer hand, less contamination at end of life.
- 6**Discreet branding.** Keeps reuse and resale possible, and produces something people actually wear.
- 7**Quantities you will use.** The most sustainable garment is the one that was needed.
The four questions worth asking a supplier
- **What is the exact composition and fabric weight?** Percentages and GSM, in writing, per style.
- **Where is the fabric from, to mill and country?** Most suppliers know; few volunteer it.
- **What certifications apply, at what step, with what reference?** The scope matters more than the logo.
- **Will you hold this record against my account per production run?** Fabric changes between runs, and this is the only cheap moment to capture it.
A supplier who can answer these has visibility into their chain. One who cannot may still be perfectly good — but you now know not to make claims resting on information nobody has.
How to describe the result
Publish the specification and stop there. "320 GSM, 100% ring-spun cotton, water-based print, made in a named country" tells an interested customer far more than "sustainably made", and carries no regulatory risk because it makes no environmental claim at all.
If you have a certification with a proper chain of custody, name the standard and what it covers. If you do not, say nothing about it. There is no middle position that is both vague and safe.
The thing that matters most
Order what you will use. Every analysis in this series arrives at the same place: an unsold garment carries its full impact for no benefit, and no material choice compensates for producing things nobody wanted. A 50-piece minimum exists precisely so a first run can be a test rather than a commitment, and so the deeper volume tiers get taken on designs that have earned them.
