Where the Carbon in a Hoodie Actually Sits

People assume the environmental cost of a garment is mostly transport, because transport is the visible part. In most lifecycle assessments it is a comparatively small share, and the two big contributors are fabric production upstream and how the garment is washed and dried downstream. This piece describes the shape rather than quoting figures, because per-garment numbers vary enormously by fibre, energy mix and assumptions.

The stages, in order

  1. 1**Fibre production.** Growing cotton or polymerising polyester. Varies hugely by fibre and by farming or production method.
  2. 2**Yarn and fabric.** Spinning, knitting or weaving. Energy-intensive, and dependent on the electricity mix where the mill sits.
  3. 3**Dyeing and finishing.** Heat and water. Frequently the largest single manufacturing contribution.
  4. 4**Cut, make and trim.** Comparatively small — sewing is not energy-hungry relative to what comes before it.
  5. 5**Freight.** Small by sea, large by air. This is the single biggest swing factor under your control.
  6. 6**Use phase.** Washing and especially tumble drying, repeated over the garment’s life. Often comparable to manufacturing.
  7. 7**End of life.** Small in emissions terms, though significant in waste terms.

Why the electricity mix matters more than the country

The same mill process produces very different emissions depending on whether the grid it runs on is coal-heavy or renewable-heavy. This is why country-of-origin generalisations are unreliable — a facility on a clean grid can outperform one nearer to you on a dirty grid.

It also means "made locally" is not automatically lower carbon. It reduces freight, which was a small share, and does nothing to the fabric stage, which was a large one, unless the fabric is also local.

The air freight exception

Sea freight per garment is genuinely small — a container holds a great many hoodies. Air freight is not remotely comparable, and it is usually chosen not because it was planned but because a deadline slipped.

This is the most actionable thing in this article. Ordering early enough to ship by sea removes a large emissions cost and a large financial one simultaneously. It is a planning decision rather than a sustainability initiative, which is what makes it easy.

The use phase is yours to influence

Over a garment’s life, washing hot and tumble drying can rival its manufacture. A brand cannot control customer behaviour, but it can influence it: care instructions that say wash cold and do not tumble dry reduce emissions, extend garment life and make prints last longer, all at once.

What actually reduces a merch programme’s footprint

  • **Make fewer, better garments that get worn longer.** Per-wear impact falls with every additional wear, and nothing else moves the number as much.
  • **Do not overproduce.** An unsold garment carries its entire footprint for no benefit whatsoever.
  • **Plan lead times so you never air freight.** Order at a point that lets production and sea freight happen without panic.
  • **Choose stock colours** and avoid bespoke dye lots at small volumes.
  • **Print care instructions that reduce washing impact,** and mean them.

On carbon neutral claims

Be careful. Neutrality claims resting on offsets have been challenged by regulators in several markets, and the substantiation bar is high. Reducing what you produce and how you ship it is defensible in a way that a purchased claim is not.
