Custom Gym Sacks and Laundry Bags: Specs That Matter

A drawstring gym sack is a simple product with one structural weak point: the bottom corners, where the cord passes through and takes the entire load. Reinforced corners with an eyelet or a stitched fabric tab are the difference between a bag that survives a season and one that tears on its second use. Everything else, fabric, print method, cord type, is secondary to that.
The Corner Test
Pick up any drawstring bag and look at the bottom two corners. On a cheap sack the cord simply passes through a hole punched in the fabric, or through a channel that ends in a plain stitched corner. All the weight of whatever is inside pulls directly on those two points, and the fabric tears out. On a properly made bag you will find either a metal eyelet set through reinforced fabric, or a folded fabric tab bartacked into the seam, spreading the load into the side seam rather than concentrating it.
That single detail is what separates a bag people actually reuse from one that becomes rubbish after an event. If you are comparing quotes and one is noticeably cheaper, this is usually where the saving came from.
Fabric Options, Honestly Assessed
Polyester in the region of 210D is the standard: light, water-resistant, cheap and it takes bold colour well. Cotton canvas around 5 to 8oz feels far better in the hand, prints beautifully, and reads as a product rather than a giveaway, at a higher price and with no water resistance at all. Non-woven polypropylene is the cheapest option and it is the one to avoid; it feels like a carrier bag, it creases permanently and it goes straight in the bin at the end of the day, which makes it the most expensive option per bag actually used.
Larger laundry bags follow the same logic with different priorities. Mesh laundry bags let damp kit breathe and are the right call for sports clubs and gyms. Heavy cotton drill laundry sacks with a cord lock suit accommodation, salons and hospitality. Ripstop nylon packs down small for travel.
Cords, Locks and Small Parts
The cord is not an afterthought. Flat cotton draw cord is comfortable across the shoulders and looks considered on a canvas bag. Thin polyester rope is cheaper and cuts into the shoulder under load. A barrel cord lock turns a gym sack into something that can be carried loosely without spilling, and costs very little. On laundry bags in shared settings, a cord lock is close to essential because otherwise the bag gapes open in transit.
Print Area Is Smaller Than You Think
The visible face of a drawstring bag and the printable area of a drawstring bag are two different measurements. You cannot print across the cord channel at the top, because the fabric there is doubled and stitched. You cannot print across the corner reinforcements. And on a made-up bag the print head needs a flat area clear of side seams, so the usable width is narrower than the flat width. Ask for the actual print area in millimetres rather than assuming the bag dimensions, and centre the design within that.
- Screen printing on cotton or polyester: bold, durable, cheapest at volume, with setup charged per colour so keep the palette tight.
- DTF transfer: full-colour detail with no colour setup, well suited to short runs and photographic artwork on either fabric.
- All-over sublimation on polyester: prints the panel edge to edge before make-up, the only route to a genuinely full-coverage bag.
- Embroidery: possible and premium-looking, but the bag is unlined so the reverse of the stitching shows inside and stiffens the panel.
- Woven label at the seam: a small, cheap finishing touch that makes a plain bag look like a considered product.

Who These Bags Are Actually For
Gym sacks work hardest in settings where people carry a small amount of kit repeatedly: school PE, swimming, five-a-side, dance and martial arts classes, festival crews, and student events. They are poor as a general corporate giveaway because most adults already own several. Laundry bags find their real use in gyms, salons, student accommodation, sports clubs and hospitality, where the bag is a working item rather than a souvenir, and where a printed name on the side genuinely helps sort things out.
No Sizes, No Waste
Bags are one of the three genuinely size-free merch categories alongside headwear and socks. Every unit fits every recipient, nothing is left over, and you never have the conversation about whether to order more mediums. On a 20-piece per-order minimum with sizes mixed freely across the run, that makes bags easy to add to an apparel order without complicating the sheet. Screen printing runs around 10 to 15 working days from artwork approval, and all-over sublimated bags sit nearer 15 to 20 because the panels are printed before the bag is made up.
