Print Durability: How to Make Custom Prints Last
By The Velocity Wear Team
Nothing undermines a brand faster than a print that cracks, peels or fades after a few washes. Durability is what separates apparel customers reorder from apparel they quietly bin. The good news is that long-lasting prints come down to a few controllable factors: the right method, proper application and sensible care. Here is how to make your custom prints last.
Why prints fail in the first place
Most print failure traces back to a handful of causes, and nearly all are preventable. Knowing them helps you spot quality work and avoid the corners that lead to early wear.
- Under-cured ink that never fully bonds to the fabric.
- Poor adhesion on the wrong fabric or an untreated surface.
- Harsh washing — high heat, aggressive cycles and strong detergents.
- Tumble drying and ironing directly over the print.
- Cheap materials that simply were not made to last.
How methods compare for durability
Each decoration method has a different durability profile. Screen printing with properly cured plastisol is extremely hard-wearing and can outlast the garment. Quality DTF bonds strongly and resists cracking well when applied and cured correctly. Sublimation is the most durable of all because the design is dyed into the fabric rather than sitting on top, so it cannot crack or peel. Embroidery is effectively permanent, as it is stitched, not printed.
Application is half the battle
Even the best method fails if applied poorly. Correct curing temperature and time, the right pressure, and matching the method to the fabric all determine whether a print survives. This is where an experienced manufacturer earns its keep — consistent, properly cured application is the difference between a print that lasts months and one that lasts years.
“A durable print is mostly invisible work — proper curing and the right method long before the garment is ever washed.”
Care habits that protect prints
- 1Wash inside out to shield the print from friction.
- 2Use a cool or cold cycle — heat is the main enemy of prints.
- 3Choose a mild detergent and skip bleach and fabric softener.
- 4Hang or lay flat to dry instead of tumble drying.
- 5If ironing, avoid the print or press from the inside on low heat.
Test before you trust
For any large or important order, run a simple wash test first. Order a sample, wash and dry it several times the way customers actually will, and inspect the print for cracking, fading or lifting edges. A quick wash test gives you real-world proof of durability before you commit to the full run and your reputation.
Durable prints start with the right method and careful application. Velocity Wear uses properly cured screen printing, DTF, sublimation and embroidery built to survive real-world wear, with a low 20-piece minimum and worldwide delivery.
